When Dreams End

Every morning when dreams end
And sometimes in the night
I rise up and get to work
Digging up the metal
From the rock that used to be my guts
Melt it in the furnace that used to be my heart
Cool it in the freezer that used to be my dreams

And work until my muscles cramp

Until my fingers bleed
Until my heart is tired of the beat

Building a cage

To trap a beast
Long extinct

Every morning when dreams end

And sometimes in the night
