My next sketch of Spain is my final one from the magical city of Granada. It was there, in 1492, that the last of the Moorish dynasty surrendered to the Catholic King Ferdinand ending eight centuries of Arab dominance. It was in that same year and town that Christopher Columbus received royal endorsement for his voyage to the new world at the recently conquered castle and fort of Alhambra. Alhambra, both literally and figuratively, looms over the city. Four centuries after the Reconquista that overthrew the Moors, Washington Irving wrote his Tales of the Alhambra. I picked up a copy near the chapel where Ferdinand and Isabella are buried. Once again, Miles Davis supplies the music from his Sketches of Spain album.
