Missing Piece

She needed to take a shower, I remember. We both did. Not together, even though I would have enjoyed that. It would have been a disruption to a relationship that we both worked so hard to make undisruptable.

“What it comes down to,” I told her, “is that if there is anything of value to you, in me, I wish you would take it.” Her easy laugh let me know that she already had.

And so it happened that one of the crucial pieces to life’s puzzle was lost to me that day. Her soft breath provided the breeze to carry it away.
