Day 18 – Total confirmed cases in US:216,722
April is not just the cruelest month – as evidenced by the sickening spiral of the number at the top of this page – it is also National Poetry Month in the US. At times like this, we hope that poetry can help heal the anguish that the horseman of pestilence has unleashed. Sometimes nothing can really help. And sometimes even healing hurts.
Healing hurts and sometimes
cruelty is the only thing that
drives the pain away and lets the scarring heal
Growing hurts and pinches all
those places trying to remain small
and easier to hide from change
Aging hurts and mocks
the certainties of youth
by turning memories to lies and conquest into shame
Love hurts both ways
Coming and going
But no pain can ever change
the heaven that lies in between
One response to “Day 18”
To be humane is what the nature is telling us to be
