Melodically, it’s not overly ambitious but has a nice little major to minor thing that works nice with a plaintive vocal. Thom Yorke uses similar progressions to great effect with Radiohead. Lyrically, it was originally a pretty simple optimist’s lament. Things suck now but they’re going to get better.
The original chorus was:
The clouds are dark tonight
Dark enough to hide the dawn
The clouds are dark tonight
But in the morning they’ll be gone
In the morning they’ll be gone
After I recorded the rough track I changed the chorus to one about holding someone for the last time. I think it fits the music better.I also had to superimpose some photos over the film of me mouthing the wrong words. I think they fit the music better, too. But what do I know?
The clouds come in waves
Grey like the sea, polluted and sore
The sea with its tongue
Licking the shore
The clouds come on soft
Taking me back, over the years
And years before that
Don’t you remember?
Don’t you remember?
I’m holding you tonight
I’m holding you until the dawn
I’m holding on so tight
‘Cause in the morning you’ll be gone
In the morning you’ll be gone
Don’t say it was a mistake
Don’t say it’s just a dream
Don’t say it’s a lie
Don’t say you don’t remember
Don’t say you don’t remember
I’m holding you tonight
I’m holding you until the dawn
I’m holding on so tight
‘Cause in the morning you’ll be gone
In the morning you’ll be gone
