The Hardest Thing

The hardest thing I’ve ever done was nothing
It’s hard not to speak – don’t say that
It’s hard not to touch – you can look but you better not…

It’s hard to let sleeping dogs lie
When you want to play fetch
It’s hard not to have another beer

It’s hard not to think
Not to think of you
Not to think of what I should be doing to you

It’s hard not to say how much I love
Not to say how much I hate
Not to say how much I hurt
Not to say how lucky I am to love and hate and hurt

The hardest thing to do is sit still
When universes of possibilities tap me on the shoulder
And say, “Come on in, sucker. The water’s fine.”

The hardest thing to be
Is somebody who isn’t me
