That soil is now depleted
And worse than dangerous
It thirsts for fresh nutrition for its decaying roots
It sees its own reflection in the water and ignores the rippling waves
It imagines green leaves sprouting from its dust
It believes its own most vicious lies
The trees have fallen, died, and burned
They’ve buried themselves in sand
They’ve shed their skin
They’ve reduced themselves to splinters

The heavy clouds can’t bear to watch
Such shamelessness
And hide from each other in thundering disgust
With spidery ejaculations of light
Roots won’t hold in soil like this
Destitute of moisture
Begging for others to make the ultimate sacrifice
There is no deception like true belief
