"You'll never know what you can do
Till you lay it all on the line
Roll the dice, expecting to lose
You might be surprised."
…getting back to that path from my last song. I’m trying to follow one that was laid down before I was born, by people trying to do their best. My parents and grandparents are the only ones I ever saw on the path but I know there are hundreds of generations before them who carried the people who carried me.
The only people on this recording are me and Julie Rozansky who plays bass and sings. There is an old Hammond organ with a Leslie rotating amp at the studio where we recorded this (Vinegar Hill Sound) and this was the perfect tune for employing them.
The video for this song is the brainchild of my partner, Nancy. We bought a painting called Rosebushes by Larry Horowitz a few years ago and she thought it would be interesting to take close-up photos of different portions of the painting before revealing the full work. I liked the idea and thought it made a nice accompaniment to this acoustic song.
We all come to forks in the path and have to make our own decisions between taking the uphill or downhill route. Sometimes you meet a gambler who stands at that fork, offering a chance to roll the dice against long odds, and you might expect to lose, but…
I don’t know where I’m going
I’m just trying to follow a path
That was laid down before I was born
By people trying to do their best
You’ll never know what you can do
Till you lay it all on the line
Roll the dice expecting to lose
You might be surprised
I don’t know what I’m doing
Feels like I’m not the only one these days
Wandering around in the dark
It’s so easy to lose your way
You’ll never know what you can do
Till you lay it all on the line
Roll the dice expecting to lose
You might be surprised
I don’t know what I’m feeling
Because it changes all the time
Maybe there’s nothing wrong with that, maybe
Maybe we’ll all turn out fine
We’ll never know what we can do
Till we lay it all on the line
Let’s roll the dice expecting to lose
You might be surprised
You might be surprised
