Day 40

Day 40 – Total confirmed cases in US: 869,172

Move over Noah, this flood is going to submerge us longer than 40 days and 40 nights. I have now spent a full Lenten season of deprivation.

Q:  What did I give up for lent?
A:  You, my fellow members of the human family.

A flood has a way of overwhelming everything and providing a reminder that nobody is immune from disaster. It tears families apart. You might be holding a loved ones slippery hand in yours one minute only to lose your grip the next and watch them drift away.

When the waters recede and the dove finds a place to perch again, we are going to have a lot of cleaning up to do. And a lot of the old muddy dreck, at least what hasn’t washed away, will need to be disposed of properly. It is going to take a lot of hard work and a lot of patience, but if we have learned anything from those on the front lines – the doctors and nurses; cops and firefighters; postal, sanitation, and transit workers; ambulance and delivery drivers; truckers and farmers; and the people working the cash registers at grocery, drug, and liquor stores – it is that we are capable of doing more than we ever imagined was possible. Even if we have to do it underwater for a while.

Creativity can be a flood, too. And so can love.

New album "Observations" available now. A veteran of NYC’s underground music scene, Mike Power played on the stages of such beloved lost venues as CBGB’s and Kenny’s Castaways, as well as stalwart surviving ones like Arlene’s Grocery and the Bitter End as singer/songwriter/bassist with Late Model Humans. In 2020, quarantining from the global pandemic he worked remotely with other artists to record a collection of new music called Observations, that infuses his punk roots with introspective acoustic pieces.
